The Living Heritage of Ghalegaun
In the high ridges of Lamjung, heritage is not locked behind glass — it is lived every day in stone courtyards, woven on ground looms, and sung during evening gatherings. Ghalegaun and its neighboring Tamu settlements preserve a social fabric built on mutual cooperation, respect for nature, and warm hospitality toward guests.
01. The Stewardship of Ama Samuha
At the heart of community hospitality in Lamjung is the Ama Samuha (Mothers’ Group). When guests arrive in the village, elders and mothers offer traditional white khadas, marigold garlands, and homemade sel roti, welcoming visitors not as strangers but as extended family.
02. Slate, Stone & Seasoned Timber
Traditional Gurung homes are engineered for mountain climates. Thick dry-stone walls retain warmth during crisp winter nights, while heavy hand-split slate roofs shed monsoon rains and frame wide verandas facing the snow peaks.
03. Sacred Dances: Ghatu & Sorathi
Passed down orally across generations, the slow, meditative movements of the Ghatu dance and the lyrical storytelling of Sorathi connect village youth with their ancestral history and seasonal agricultural cycles.
